Mercy Childrens Home
The Mercy Children's Home is located in Uriri, South Nyanza, Kenya. This home for
orphaned and abandoned children was started in 1998 by Consolate A Muga. The property
of 4.5 acres was purchased by AAI during 2005/2006. Many improvements have been
made since that time. The boy's wing was completed in May 2007. As well as having
a dining room, reception lounge and Office, the ten plus boys now have bedrooms
and cupboards. The boys had been sleeping in a portion of the old tin shed on the
property, the larger portion of which is still used for the Mercy Nursery School
room and Church meetings.
A cow-shed has been built for the resident cow who is now 'expecting second calf.
The children enjoy fresh milk. The cow is hand fed with a long grass crop grown
for that purpose called 'Napier Grass';. It needs to be cut and chopped each day
to feed the cows. All cows are raised in the ‘zero grazing’ method because of the
danger to cattle of tropical diseases.
A new kitchen and storeroom has been built. A second building is now under construction.
The foundation, walls and upper slab, ready for future development, is all completed.
We are now working on the internal finishing of walls and ceilings. Our goal to
to complete one of the two girls dormitories which will eventually be on the ground
floor. Each dormitory will have ensuite bathrooms and wardrobes to faciltate bathing
and dressing in the mornings. Many children are in a desperate state, barely surviving
in an already impoverished society. Many children who should be in care continue
to suffer hunger and lack of any services to assist them when they fall ill. At
present there is no room nor enough sponsors to assist these children. Your support
will make a difference to one child or more, contact African Action today, we need
your help.
